Trigger point injections are a way to treat muscular neck and back pain due to muscle inflammation and spasm. The muscles of the neck and back are multi-layered and run in multiple different directions. When a muscle injury to the neck or back occurs, it is often multiple muscles that are injured.

Muscles inherently are made of many thousands of muscle fibers. With a muscle injury, many independent muscle fibers are injured but sometimes one or more muscle fiber groups are particularly painful and act as a “trigger” for pain throughout the entire muscle. When pressure is applied to this “trigger” area, the entire larger muscle experiences spam and pain.

What Happens During a Trigger Point Injection?

The medication injected can vary but usually includes a short and long acting numbing medicine like Lidocaine and Marcaine respectively. A steroid medication is also usually included, which provides for longer lasting pain relief. These homeopathic medications are intended for those patients that are adverse to steroids for any of a number of reasons. Homeopathic medications, such as Traumeel and Zeel, have anti-inflammation properties similar to steroid medications and can provide similar long acting relief.
