‍Low Back Pain: How much bed rest is too much bed rest?

‍‍Acute low back pain will usually resolve within a couple of days to a couple of weeks. Bed rest is recommended for no more than 24 hours. This should be followed by a slow return to daily activities. What can I do to improve my low back pain? Staying in bed for too long can create stiffness in your back and increase your pain. There are both active and passive techniques to improve low back pain. Some passive techniques include:

  • Heat/ice
  • Manipulation
  • Massage

Choosing the right type of exercise for you. Not all people enjoy the same type of exercise. You are more likely to stick with an exercise you enjoy, especially if you have friends or family with similar interests to help motivate you. Some daily exercises include:

  • Yoga & low back stretching
  • Physical therapy (click here to download our at-home physical therapy help sheet)
  • Scenic walks in the park
  • Biking
  • Lifting light weights
  • Swimming
  • Zumba

Get moving! Excessive bed rest can lead to deconditioning and create additional problems leading to chronic pain. The sooner you start moving the more likely you are to improve.
